What is the difference between prostatic adenoma and benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Prostatic adenoma is cancer, plain and simple. Benign hyperplasia is simply enlargement of the prostate gland. The latter occurs to most men, if they live long enough. It becomes an issue only if it enlarges to the point that urination becomes difficult.

Symptoms of prostate cancer may include the following: urinary problems, such as not being able to urinate, having a hard time starting or stopping the flow of urine, needing to urinate often, especially at night, weak flow of urine, urine flow that starts and stops, pain or burning during urination, difficulty having an erection, blood in the urine or semen, and/or frequent pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs. Prostate cancer usually does not cause symptoms in the beginning stages. By the time symptoms do occur, the disease may have spread beyond the prostate.

The “Prostate Cancer Treatment” report includes a review of possible signs and symptoms (such as weak flow of urine or painful ejactulation); descriptions of the various tests used for diagnosis (including digital rectal exam and prostate-specific antigen test); an explanation of the various stages of prostate cancer (Stages I, II, III, and IV); an overview of treatment options (including watchful waiting, surgery, and radation therapy); and also includes 10 pages of related medical terminology (to help you understand what your medical provider is talking about.

Prostatctomy. TURP or TUIP (Greenlight Laser surgery) for BPH?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

I have BPH (enlarged benign prostatic hyperplasia) and get up 2 to 3 times at night to urinate. I use Flomax daily.
My urology doctor says that I should get either GreenLight Laser (TUIP) or Transurethal resection of Prostate (TURP) surgery done. He says both procedures are safe. (He was leaning more towards Laser surgery).
My questions are:
a) Which one of the two procedures is safer?
b) After the surgery, urine flow will improve without medication but what about the FREQUENCY. Will I still have to get up at night to pass urine? (In other words, will it increase the capacity of my bladder?)

My doctor says "it may".

He is participating in a study that uses 120-watt GreenLight Laser to treat enlarged prostates

If it were me I would go for the laser treatment. Afterwards your flow should increase and you should not have to get up in the night to urinate as there should be less pressure on your urethra and bladder because the prostate will be less enlarged. Go for it and good luck.

benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

So i had this exam today and this was a question…..

Your patient comes in to the ER with SEVERE symptoms of BPH, what would be your most immediate concern?

a. renal calculi
b. renal insufficiency
c. prostate cancer

…..any ideas??
thank you! that was the answer i went with. i was between renal calc and renal insufficiency, but i figured renal insufficiency would be the most logical to pick and plus if they had renal calc they have severe pain in the flank area…and i don’t think BPH has flank pain…just bladder pain. thanks for the help!!!

Well I am not a doc but the renal insufficiency will kill quicker than the rest and must be ruled out first. Renal calculi can cause pain & blockage, but if the kidney isn’t funcioning properly, it won’t flush it out. If it’s prostate ca you still have nothing to loose by checking kidney function first. At least you will know the if the kidney is killing them now. Make sense?

Magistral

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

A unique product for men over 40, Magistral is a fast-acting, natural liquid product that consistently helps to relieve symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Magistral contains a proprietary extract of Saw Palmetto, the best-studied herb for the support of prostate health, together with four other herbs to help men maintain life-long vitality.

Magistral uses a proprietary technology to extract only the active oil portion of the Saw Palmetto berry, so Magistral contains the maximum amount of bioactivity from the Saw Palmetto plant. This is unlike most other commercially available Saw Palmetto products, which include extracts of the whole berry, including leaves and pulp, and significantly dilute the active oil portion which results in much weaker activity. Saw Palmetto helps to relieve the urological symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) (Wilt et al. 2002; Blumenthal et al. 2000).
In addition to the unusually high concentration of the active Saw Palmetto oil, Magistral also contains four carefully selected, energy-boosting vitality herbs.
Magistral has been proven to be an effective, fast-acting natural alternative for supporting prostate health.

what medicine to take for bph(Benign prostatic hyperplasia)?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Generally alpha blockers such as doxazosin are used which block the action of alpha receptors and relax the muscle in the prostate and improve symptoms. 5a reductase inhibitors reduce progression. There is also the option of surgery such as the trans urethral resection of prostate (TURP).
