How can you make yourself pee with an enlarged prostate?

My husband has this issue a few times a year. Is there anything he can do to make his pee come out? He says he feels he needs to pee and just can’t he has tried to pee for the last 3 hours. Is there anything he can do for immediate relief?
Thank you all for all your help he did finally pee and the doc called him in flomax and cipro you all were very helpful! Thanks!

He should see a doctor. There are medications like hytrin that make urination easier by relaxing muscles, or ones that directly reduce the enlargement.
If he cannot urinate at all, it’s a medical emergency and he should get to a doctor right away for catheterization (a thin tube inserted into the bladder–sounds terrible but it provides instant relief).
He can also have minor surgery to fix the enlargement more or less permanently. The procedure is called a TUR. When you read about it, it sounds awful but of course the patient is anesthetized.
There’s no reason for a man to continue to suffer from the effects of an enlarged prostate these days.

Alcohol makes the problem worse, but, under normal circumstances, I find that if I hold back for as long as possible, without wetting my pants, everything goes well, and with an excellent flow rate. I also refuse to play its silly little game: if I feel the need to go but nothing happens, I do myself up and walk out of the toilet. Invariably I will have to go straight back in, and things then happen in an "acceptable manner. Maybe acceptance and relaxation are the answers.

This is an old trick. Dip his fingers in warm water when he’s asleep, it makes you go every time.

If you Google the acronym BPH you will find most of the information you need to know about enlarged prostate. Technically it’s called benign prostate hyperplasia which means the cells of the prostate gland have increased in number which makes the prostate larger and puts a squeeze on the urethra making it more difficult to urinate. Your hubby is having a growing problem as they say on the TV ads, his prostate is growing. They have medications for the problem if it’s not to severe, e.g I take a capsule called Hytrin that works very well. He should really consult a Urologist for this problem though instead of a general practitioner or family doctor.
